The vestibulo-ocular reflex involves three parts: A peripheral sensory apparatus (which consists of a set of motion sensors: the semicircular canals and the otolith organs (saccule and utricle) A central processing mechanism; A motor output (which are the eye muscles) The vestibulo-ocular reflex ( VOR) or oculovestibular reflex is a reflex eye movement that stabilizes images on the retina during head movement by producing an eye movement in the direction opposite to head movement, thus preserving the image on the center of the visual field. For example, when the head moves to the right, the eyes move to the left, and vice versa. The vestibulo-ocular reflex has five components: a receptor that receives the stimulus, an afferent pathway, a central nervous system relay, an efferent pathway, and an effector that responds with a reaction. So, let’s use an example - let’s say that you turn your head slightly to the right. This is our stimulus.
